You may not have the ability to kick holes in the fabric of reality, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look as suave as one of the Young Avengers’ more stylish members. Despite being a fictional character, America Chavez (A.K.A Ms. America) has always been one of my style icons. Whether she’s kickin’ some alien butt or saving the universe by jumping through parallel universes, America manages to rock one heck of a wardrobe. In celebration of this week’s holiday, I thought I’d try my hand at her iconic star-spangled denim jacket. This pattern utilizes Mood’s awesome array of fabric paints, as well as the perfect denim featuring a beautiful and reversible face.

All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30.

First, get all your materials together and your pattern pieces cut out. Using a marking tool, divide your front and back yokes into stripes. America has three on the front and four in the back, so I made mine each 1.75″ for a size 8 jacket.

In addition to your yoke stripes. you’ll also want to add three stars to each sleeve stripe and one large star to the center back on your jacket. I made the sleeve stars slightly different sizes on my version, with the top being 4.5″ across, the center being 4″, and the lowest star being 3.5″ across.

Once your panels are done being painted, it’s time to start constructing the actual jacket. Begin by rolling and edge-stitching the extensions at the bottom of your sleeves pieces, like you can see in the left picture above. Attach your upper and lower sleeve panels to either side of your star stripe. Be sure to match up the extensions at the bottom and leave them open, like in the photo on the right.

Next, you can set your sleeves aside for the time being and get started on the front of your jacket. Attach the lower side and center front panels and then stitch down your seam allowance.

Iron the raw edges of your pockets inward and stitch along the top. Pin and sew into place about 1″ from the top of your jacket panel, centering along the seam. Create your pocket flaps by sewing two, fabric faces together, flipping right side out and edge-stitching. Pin into place along the top of your jacket pieces, aligning the flap with the pocket.

Add your front yoke to their respective front jacket panels, stitching the pocket flaps into place in the process. You can also take this time to create the button placket along the center front of your jacket by folding the center edge inward 1/2″ and then another 1.5″ and edge-stitching.

Add one layer of your collar to your neckline along the outside of your jacket. Attach your facing along the top three edges of your collar, fabric faces together, and then turn right side out. Fold the raw edge inward, press, and then edge-stitch around the entirety of the collar.

Pick your sleeves back up and sew along each of their inseams. Attach them at the shoulders of your jacket and then add one cuff layer to the bottom of each sleeve. Add a facing and finish the same way you did with your collar, this time sewing along the bottom three edges, tucking in the raw edge, and stitching around its entirety.

Following suit of the previous two steps, add your waistband similarly. Lastly, use the directions on the back of your jean buttons to add them in regular intervals along the front placket of your jacket, as well as on the pockets and sleeve cuffs.
