First put into production in Norwich, England during the 19th century, challis is a thin soft material that is matte in texture and rather pliable. Available in solids as well as printed options, French Challis is a specialty fabric with a brilliant finish. Originally manufactured as a matte compliment to Norwich crepe, this fabric has an easy drape and is often used for softer tops and light garments, not an ideal bottomweight.
